The Radio Verulam Film Guide: 18th December 2015

The show this evening was the last Film Guide before Christmas, so Simon came in dressed head to toe in a massive and somewhat impressive Santa outfit. We were quite impressed at his commitment to the bit, especially as he had a big sack of what appeared to be gifts. We assumed (rather naively) that Simon was dressed like this for some charitable reason, such as dropping presents off to boys and girls less fortunate than ourselves. Turns out that he was dressed like that for less than charitable reasons.

Simon had just been involved in a bank heist involving the Easter Bunny, Frankenstein's Monster, and, weirdly, Terry from East 17. They didn't actually escape with any money or gold, because they couldn't get past the belligerent cashier, so instead they just took all the pens, pamphlets and a chair from the lobby. He spent the rest of the show putting it all on eBay to try and get some cash from it.

Ok, that was a lie, but Simon was in the studio to talk about the UK box office, new releases in the cinema, and his pick of films on TV for the coming week.

Today on Health Matters, Alan discusses about the final three key topics for this years feature, with the return of the section of the show on January 12th next year!

Your Care, Your Future

The first topic for this weeks Health Matters was about the Strategic Review of Health care and Social Services in West Herts, which started 12 months ago and just came to some key conclusions.

Discussed was the hospitals in the area centralising with local hubs for diagnostics urgent care, and possibly recovery. Three options were considered which included:
  • Centralise at a new build
  • Centralise at Watford
  • Acute at Watford and planned care at St Albans
You can find out more information about the Strategic Review by clicking on the links below:

So – will the strategic review be strategic, or a quick fix?

"Stay Well This Winter"

With Christmas fast approaching and Winter being the worst time of the year for our health, Alan spoke about some of the many ways we can help ourselves. The main parts are covered here  which included exercising as much as you can whilst avoiding the icy streets, as well as watching out for others; becoming a good neighbour for your area!

Antibiotics

And the final topic spoken about this week was about bacteria becoming more resistant to antibiotics with many GP's becoming under pressure to prescribe them much less. So next time your doctor says that antibiotics may not help, don't be suprised!

You can find out more about Antibiotic Awareness here.

The Radio Verulam Film Guide: 4th December 2015

Simon burst into the studio this evening, screaming 'SANCTUARY! SANCTUARY!' as loud as he possibly could. Danny, who struggled to muster up the energy to care but eventually did so, asked him what had happened. Simon explained using some words that could be best described as 'made-up' but the essence of his story was that he had been walking his pet salami over the fields of rural Hertfordshire when he was set upon by a couple of vicious crows. Simon and his salami were then the victims of the attempted murder (a pun for all you collective noun fans there) and they ended up flying off with his salami. The last he saw of his dearest Nathaniel (the salami's name, apparently) was the bird taking him over the treeline towards the Abbey in the distance. He then ran screaming, tears rolling down his face, all the way to the studio.

Having heard the whole story, which raised far more questions than we thought could be possible, Danny gave

Local Literary Feature With Holly Hepburn

In our local literary feature today we were joined by local author Tamsyn Murray, who also writes under the name of Holly Hepburn. The first of Holly's series of e-novellas about life in a pub called the Star and Sixpence, set in a quintessential English country village is out this month. Two sisters inherit a pub from their late father, who they have been estranged from for years. Village life, and the challenges they face getting the pub off the ground, provide the backdrop for the sisters to reinvent their lives and make a fresh start.

Snowdrops at the star and sixpence is just the start of a series of e-novellas which will be coming out over the next year, before being compiled into a book for publication.

Holly talked to us about the differences between writing for digital, rather than for print, and how the industry has changed during her time as an author. To prepare for the book she also had to research what it's like to run a village pub - so had the enviable task of spending many a Sunday afternoon sampling many different pubs and the drinks on offer in them.

For more information about Holly's work you can visit her website and her Twitter (@hollyh_author).

Rosamund Pike and Neil Patrick Harris also star in the critically acclaimed film, which was elected the best adaptation of 2014.
