The Radio Verulam Film Guide: 30th October 2015

Simon was off on holiday/on a retreat to deal with his beige jumper addiction, so the ever-young and beautiful Chris Aikman stepped into the breach to save the day. Luckily, Chris comes prepared with his own film guide to present, even if he isn't due to be on that week. He's learned to do this because of just how unreliable Simon can be. In fact, Chris pretty much has a back-up prepared for most of Simon's day-to-day life. He's written hundreds of sermons to be used at a moments notice at Simon's church; he's picked up Mrs. Simon from the pub, when Simon is too drunk on beige jumpers to get her; he's basically parented Simon's children for most of their lives, which is why they're relatively normal.

Ok, that was a lie, but Chris was in the studio to talk about the UK box office, new releases in the cinema, and his pick of films on TV for the coming week.

Annie's Film Club: A Million Ways To Die In The West

Our fourth and final film for the Film Club this week is A Million Ways To Die In The West, released back in summer last year (2014).

Set in 1882 in the American west, Albert is a lowly farmer with a nice girlfriend. But when she leaves him for the more successful and handsome owner of a moustachery store, Albert returns to his lonely daily life of trying to avoid death. Then the mysterious Anna rides into town and captures Albert's interest and heart, but with her deadly husband in town, Albert is going to have to become the western gun-slinging hero he never was. It won't be easy because there are a million ways to die in the west.

The film is directed by Seth MacFarlane who is most commonly known for his role in directing Ted. He is seen playing the focal character (Albert) in the film, alongside stars such as Charlize Theron and Amanda Seyfried who is known for her performance in Mean Girls and Mamma Mia!.

Annie's Film Club: Star Wars Episode I: Phantom Menace

Star Wars Episode I: Phantom Menace is the third film to continue this weeks theme of films featuring Liam Neeson. A film that many will remember Neeson starring as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, with his long hair and husky voice.

Phantom Menace is about two Jedi Knights that escape a hostile blockade to find allies and come across a young boy who may bring balance to the Force, but the long dormant Sith resurface to reclaim their old glory.

Released back in 1999, the George Lucas directed film was the first film released in the saga that was then later re-released in 3D. It features incredibly well-known actors such as Natalie Portman, Frank Oz, Ewan McGregor and Jake Lloyd.

Daria Kulesh joins us on the Drivetime sessions @DariaKulesh

We were delighted to be joined by singer-songwriter Daria Kulesh.

Daria's Russian roots are refelcted in her beautiful music, which is intertwined by her experiences of a range of multicultural influences.

Annie's Film Club: Taken 3

To continue the theme of this week of films that feature Liam Neeson, we have a look at the last of the Taken series, Taken 3. Directed by Olivier Megaton last year, who also worked with Neeson on the second of the Taken franchise back in 2012.

Neeson is seen once again as an ex-government agent, Bryan Mills, who is accused of a ruthless murder he never even committed or witnessed. As he is tracked and pursued, Mills brings out his particular set of skills to find the true killer and clear his name.

Features Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker, who is most commonly known for his appearance in Criminal Minds: Suspect Behaviour. Maggie Grace also makes her final appearance in the Taken franchise as Bryan Mills beloved daughter Kim Mills.

Flooring advice from our resident Interior Designer @GA_Interiors

We are joined in the studio today by Gwendoline Alderton from GA Interiors to give us great advice about flooring choices.

Flooring affects the feel, proportions and perspective of a room, so it's important to choose carefully!

Image result for flooring  Image result for flooring  Image result for flooring

Colour matters..

Black can give a feel of stability but sap the light.  You need a really bright room or consider adding extra spotlights.  Grey is very modern and contemporary and can be lifted with bright accessories. Blue suppresses the appetite so choose carefully where to use it.  White and off whites look fabulous, especially if you're creating a seaside theme. Brown is neutral and wood flooring adds warmth.  If you feel its a little dated, add a beautiful rug to add interest.

Rule of 3rds!  don't forget that if you want to use different types of flooring, make sure 3 is the maximum you can see and look at the overall impression.

Annie's Film Club: Non Stop

Hang on one minute! 'Annie's Film Club'?

For this week only, I'll be talking about all things films as a fill in for Chris! After that, I'll leave it to the expert!

This weeks theme focuses on any films that feature irish actor Liam Neeson, known to many by his 'particular set of skills' and the action films that he has been featured in.

To kick the theme off, the Jaume Collet-Sera directed action film Non Stop is up to show what it has to offer! Released back in 2014, Neeson stars as an alcoholic air marshal by the name of Bill Marks who springs into action during a transatlantic flight due to receiving a series of text messages that put his fellow passengers at risk unless the airline transfers $150 million into an off-shore account.

It features Julianne Moore as a sassy confident passenger situated next to Neeson's role as Agent Marks with the help from flight attendant Nancy, played by the gorgeous Michelle Dockery known from Downton as Lady Mary.

Wacky Maths with Claire Oglesby of @mathswackyway

Today Claire Oglesby was in the studio to discuss her innovative, "wacky", approach to teaching maths.

A lifelong maths enthusiast, Claire drew on her experiences as a maths tutor at university (no prizes for guessing her degree choice) to write a book. Maths the Wacky Way aims to inject fun into a subject students are often bored by, with a focus on secondary-school-age students. Including things like a fractions-based dance, the book has proven to be a hit with students and parents alike.

Claire is also actively involved in the local community. As part of the Dragons Apprentice challenge, she and a fellow dragon are guiding a group of local students called Team Emerald.

Portraits with @kimleuen

Thanks to Angela Clarke for the photo

On today's show our resident Photography Correspondent, Kim Leuenberger, discussed portrait photography.  She explained that, as far as she was concerned, this referred to photographing people or objects, regardless of the picture orientation.

One of the important things to remember when photographing people is the rule of thirds; try to keep the object in the bottom two thirds of the picture frame.  Kim also mentioned how to keep the object in focus, explaining that some amazing effects can be achieved using the focus settings on your camera (even on your phone).  One such effect is where the object of your portrait photograph is in focus whilst the image surrounding the object is slightly out of focus.  This can be achieved with adjustments to the focus settings (sometimes, by simply tapping the middle of your phone screen) or applying a Tilt Shift filter in Instagram (or similar) apps.

Kim prides herself on her photographic prowess and believes she can spot whether a photograph has had this filter applied or whether the effect has been achieved using the focus settings.  Therefore, I showed her an image recently taken by friend of the show, local author Angela Clarke (new book Follow Me out soon!).  The photograph is a beautiful portrait picture of her husband Sam (it is unknown if he has a book out soon!) playing a piano at St Pancras train station.  Kim almost immediately identified that the picture was adjusted using the Tilt Shift filter - even spotting that it was the radial filter that was applied!

You can find out more about Kim and photography via www.kimleuenberger.com and she is @kim.ou on Instagram.

To hear the feature again, go to www.radioverulam.com/listenagain and navigate to Monday at 5.30pm.  It will be available for seven days after broadcast.
