Interior Design with @GA_Interiors

Gwendoline was in the studio once again this week to discuss interior design for your holiday home.

She stressed the importance of pastel colours and muted tones when it comes to paints, for example using a soft blue with a sea green. Gwendoline says that using these colours gives a sense of relaxation that is essential for a holiday home.

Another area Gwendoline focused on was the use of objects that bring memories in a holiday home. She pointed to how some people collect and frame luggage tags as an example of memorabilia suited for a holiday home.

Finally, Gwen discussed how furniture with textures that are perhaps out of the ordinary can create a holiday atmosphere. Wicker chairs were something she said had both a sense of quirkiness and lightness that suits a holiday home.

The Radio Verulam Film Guide: 24th July 2015

Simon was actually in the studio on time this evening, much to the shock of everyone around, but things quickly went down hill from there. He arrived with 'a little snack' in preparation for the show. It turned out to be a two-week old burrito - which appeared to be moving under it's own steam - but Simon insisted was fine. He wolfed it down before anyone could stop him, and got on with the show. Two-thirds of the way through the show Simon's face suddenly turned. He unclipped his seatbelt (he brings his own seatbelt whenever he is going to have to sit down, because he often topples out of chairs for no reason) and rushed off to the toilet. This meant that the incredibly dashing Chris had to step in at the last moment to finish off the show with aplomb. Simon is still in the toilet, so someone should probably check on him...

Ok, that was a lie, but Simon was in the studio to talk about the UK box office and new releases in the cinema,  while Chris spoke about his pick of films on free-to-air TV for the coming week.

Hertbeats

Today, Glenda Elder was in the studio to discuss Hertbeats, a local charity dealing with cardiac issues.

It acts as a support network for people who have had heart attacks or ongoing heart issues. She said that they aim to show these people that life can remain enjoyable, even in the face of such serious issues.

Hertbeats mainly concerns itself with social activities to build friendships and positivity. According to Glenda, the main tools used by the charity are "tea, biscuits and banter" at their meetings, which take place on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at St Mary's Church in Marshalswick.

The charity also offers more practical support, such as annual talks from cardiologists.

The Radio Verulam Film Guide: 10th July 2015

Throughout the whole week we've been joined on the show by Scarlett, who has been tolerating Danny's antics reasonably well, partly because she's more professional than most of the people who already work here, and partly because Danny has to sign off on her work experience report. Honor, who has given up on the cult of Lakshuma and has been searching for something else to put her focus into, has latched onto Scarlett and looks up to her like an older sister.

However, Honor has started acting like a very young little sister, getting jammy hands in Scarlett's hair, drawing in crayon over her homework, and crying when Scarlett wouldn't let her have a lolly because she hadn't had her dinner yet. Honor is now taking a time-out on the Naughty Step while she thinks about what she's done.

Ok, that was a lie, but Simon was in the studio to talk about the UK box office, new releases in the cinema, and his pick of films on free-to-air TV for the coming week.

Interview with Dani Atkins @AtkinsDani

Radio Verulam spoke to Dani Atkins this evening - author of Fractured and The Story of Us - as part of our local literary feature.

Born in London in 1958, Dani grew up in North London before moving to rural Hertfordshire in 1985, where she has lived in a small village ever since with her husband and two grown-up children.

She explained that the 'premise of both books are very similar, focusing on how lives can change dramatically and instantaneously following a sudden event - or accident.'

Self-published initially, 'Fractured' focuses on the life of Rachel who wakes up after an accident with a perfect life, a fiance, a loving family and friends - yet a looming memory of a not so perfect life before the accident is proving hard to shake off. Gripping, romantic and heartbreaking, it asks - can two different stories lead to the same happy ending?

Dani said: 'We've all had those instances where we've questioned 'what if', the books focuses on the choices people make."

If you missed our interview, you can listen again here!

More information can be found on Dani's Twitter page - @AtkinsDani

Penny Carr: Being thrifty with @BeingMrsC

Today Penny Carr was in the studio to discuss 'Being thrifty with @BeingMrsC. Penny is our local thrifty correspondent. She brings in monthly articles about saving money.

Firstly Penny talked about the dreaded three words 'Back to School'. She advised going shopping now to buy school uniform, shoes and stationery. The bigger supermarkets like Tesco and Sainsbury's have the full collection, whilst Aldi started doing polo shirts as of last year. Some schools have second hand clothes stalls available.

Penny also gave details on a number of summer holidays activities for children to take part in, including:

  1. The 'Play in the Parks' scheme running from 23rd July to 28th August (Monday to Friday)
  2. Verulamium Museum (Full details on their website: http://www.stalbansmuseums.org.uk/verulamium/)
  3. The St Albans Libraries, as part of the Herts County Council, have events including 'Summer Reading Challenge 2015' taking place between 11th July to 5th September for under 11s (Record Breakers) and also for 11-18 year olds (imaginNation).

There was also a discussion about food surpluses in supermarkets. Could surplus food be used more efficiently? There are some great articles on savings at supermarkets at 'Emma's Savvy £ Savings', found here http://mumssavvysavings.com/.

Penny also has a brilliant blog called 'Being Mrs C' where she regularly posts useful advice on money savings and discounts. You can find her blog at http://beingmrsc.com/ and also her Twitter page at https://twitter.com/beingmrsc
