The theme for the Film Club this week is 'Best Picture Oscar Winners', so I've started the week with a recent one. Argo won the award for Best Picture two years ago, and is 'based' on the true events in 1979, when Iranian protesters stormed the US embassy in Tehran and took most people hostage. Six diplomats managed to escape and hid with the Canadian Ambassador until they could be rescued.
The film takes great artistic licence with the events of history, and most certainly shouldn't be seen as historical fact, but it is still a very well made and exciting movie. It stars (and is directed by) Ben Affleck, and also features Alan Arkin, Victor Garber, Tate Donovan, Bryan Cranston and John Goodman.
