Martin Finney on autumn gardening

Today on the show, regular guest Martin Finney from Aylett Nurseries came in to discuss autumn gardening tips.

He advises to use autumn as a time of preparation: plant bulbs such as daffodils, which you can almost forget about until spring (make sure to plant bulbs in  a sunny area). He also encouraged putting down winter bedding now while the soil's still warm, so that hardy flowers such as pansies will live through the winter months.

As we are in the harvest period, he says this is an ideal time to pick produce such as peas or apples. It is also a good time to protect currently growing fruit or vegetables, or sow things like carrots.

He also had exciting news about the upcoming Apple Weekend at Aylett Nurseries from the 18th - 19th of October. People are encouraged to bring any varieties of apple that they can't identify and experts will be happy to inform you about them. Youngsters are welcome at this event and also at the pumpkin scooping that will be happening there before Halloween from the 25th to the 29th of October.
