Chris' Film Club: City of God

Continuing this week's theme of foreign language films we move on to South America (Brazil specifically) and the wonderfully epic and sprawling crime drama City of God. Set in the favelas of Rio (and starring many actors who actually grew up in the favelas) City of God tells the story of several young men who grow up in and around organised crime in the 1960s through to the 80s. It's equal parts darkly funny and thrilling, with great direction and sumptuous cinematography. A must see for any film fan.

It is directed by Katia Lund and Fernando Meirelles and stars Alexandre Rodrigues. The trailer can be seen below (although it does make it look a little silly).
