The Radio Verulam Film Guide: 29th November 2013

Tonight Simon came into the studio with rather glazed-over eyes and a thousand-yard stare. It's the sort of look he gets 8-10 hours after eating his 'Giggle Brownies' but something was a little different. Normally he would still have a creepy fixed smile plastered on his face but today he seemed a lot more morose. No, it turned out that people at work had been bullying him about his facial hair. Certainly this blog has been nothing but supportive of that pathetic whisp of hair that he should be thoroughly ashamed of but it seems that others are not being as kind as we are. It seems like he has had his lunch stolen from the fridge at work, he's been getting mean notes put on his desk saying that his 'tache is almost as bad at being facial hair as Brentford FC are at being a football team and even his family are starting to distance themselves from him (although that might have more to do with his general personality). Still, he only has to wear that thing on his face for another day and then it can be burnt off. With acid. Strong, strong acid.

Ok, that was a lie, but Simon (and his facial hair) were in the studio to talk about the UK box office and his mustaches' pick of films on TV for the coming week.

The Radio Verulam Film Guide: 22nd November 2013

Today we were joined in the studio by Tom Selleck look-a-like Simon Carver (they're both old), who decided to celebrate the growth of his 10th hair on his face (all in aid of Movember) by buying a massive comb which he was desperate to use to keep his facial hair in check. Simon has raised 7p, a button and copious amounts of laughter (although, to be fair, that might not be aimed squarely at that thing he calls a 'tache; it could easily be aimed at his clothes or hair) to fight prostate cancer so he's not done quite as well as he had hoped. He was aiming for at least 13p and a zip.

Ok, that was a lie, but Simon was in the studio to discuss the UK box office and his pick of films on free-to-air TV for the coming week.

Faff-Free Cook Cooking with Jackie Johnson – Cornish Fairings

My motto has always been ‘never trust a skinny cook!' I do like to share recipes that I know work for me. They are not necessarily of my invention – but I will always give you the origin and maybe the story behind them! These recipes are relatively easy to make – hence the title, Faff-Free Cooking.

So, today’s treat is ….... Cornish Fairings

Ingredients:

50g butter
50g caster sugar
125g plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
4 tbsp golden syrup
1 good tsp ground ginger
1 good tsp mixed spice

Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 200C/Gas 6. Sift the flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, ginger and mixed spice into a large bowl and stir in the caster sugar.
  2. With your fingers rub in butter or margarine until the mixture is like breadcrumbs.
  3. Add the golden syrup and bring the mixture together to form soft dough.

  1. Divide the dough into 12 pieces and with floured hands, roll each of the pieces into a ball and place them on a baking sheet covered with baking parchment or greaseproof paper.

  1. Bake at 200C/Gas 6 for 8 mins until nutty brown and cracked on the surface.

  1. Leave them on the baking tray to firm up for a few mins and then transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Enjoy!

The Radio Verulam Film Guide: 15th November 2013

As Chris is off today, it falls upon me to attempt to chronicle something of the life of Simon Carver.  This afternoon, he waltzed into the studio wearing a Hawaiian shirt more colourful than his social life, sporting six scraggly hairs on his top lip and insisting we refer to him off-air as Magnum.  It seems he is taking Movember a little too far!

OK, some of that was made up (though not as much as you might think!) but Simon and Danny did discuss new releases Don Jon, The Butler and The Counsellor, as well as the UK cinema box office top 10 and Simon's choice of films on free-to-air TV for the forthcoming week:

Suranga Documentary @SurangaWater

Today we were joined in the studio by A.J Ullah and Adam Jones-Lloyd who are about to embark upon making their latest documentary. In January they will journey to Kerala in India with Dr. Darren Crook and Sudhir Tripathi to film a documentary about Suranga: the particular style of water harvesting that is traditional in the district.
File:സുരംഗം - മുഖം 01.JPG

The teaser film for the documetary has already received critical acclaim in an international film festival called Voices from the Water, being shown simultaneously in India and Sweden.

Here is the link to the teaser:
https://vimeo.com/67379019

They are running a Kick-Starter (creative fundraising) campaign to aid them in completing the film in a manner which will give the people struggling to obtain clean drinking water an opportunity to voice themselves, while at the same time documenting the dying tradition- which in most cases is better than the more modern techniques the government provides incentives for.

The Radio Verulum Film Guide: Friday 8th November 2013

Today Simon was back in the studio after taking a week long hiatus to celebrate turning 80. To be perfectly honest, it's amazing that he has lived as long as he has. Let's just say that he taught Keith Richards everything there is to know about how to party. Those days are far behind him now of course but it has taken a toll on his life. For instance, he now has to carry his liver around in a jar with him because the rest of his organs revolted against it and ended up pushing it out of his body. He also doesn't have any of his own hair on his head and that monstrosity that he calls a 'hair style' is actually his back hair glued onto his head. Behind those gravel coloured jumpers and slightly stiff exterior, beats the heart of a true party animal. Simon, we salute you.

Ok, that was a lie, but Simon was back in the studio to talk about the UK box office, new releases at the cinema and his pick of films on TV for the coming week.

The Radio Verulum Film Guide: Friday 1st November 2013

Today Chris was in the hot seat today because Simon was away celebrating his 80th birthday. Simon had organised his own birthday party this year and he settled on a family trip to Spearmint Rhino. He picked out his best Hawaiian shirt, winkle pickers and necklace (the one that reads 'SIMON' in diamond-studded gold) and jumped into the pre-booked mini-van. It was only when the party pulled up outside Whipsnade Zoo did Simon suspect something was amiss. Turns out Simon hadn't been wearing his glasses when booking the tickets and as such his family had to endure 6 hours of Britney Spears' documentary on the best rhinos that the North of England has to offer. Spears' Mint Rhinos was a bit of a let down.

Ok, that was a lie, but Chris was in the studio instead of Simon today and he talked about the UK box office, new releases and his pick of films on free-to-air TV for the coming week.
