Today's guest was Ian Murtagh from 'The Crescent'
'The Crescent' is a Support service for those affected by AIDS and HIV established in 1988. The name came from their original location in Church Crescent before moving to their current base in Russell Avenue.
They over a range of support services, for people with issues of medication and health and offer complementary therapy for those experiencing side effects. They also raise awareness by visiting colleges, to spread awareness of the AIDS and HIV viruses.
Unfortunately last August The Crescent received news that Herts County Council and NHS Herts were withdrawing funding for the initiative, resulting in many redundancies. A couple of volunteers have stayed on raising money to continue through their own finances and fundraising events. Some county councilors have allocated money through their charitable reserve budgets, however much more is needed to support the service users as much as before.
In February some extremely generous personal donors put on a benefit concert at their own cost and on the 24th May there will be a Quiz held at Homewood Road United Reform Church. Teams of up to 6 people are invited to partake and individuals are also welcome. The cost is £22 per team of four plus £5 per team member thereafter, all proceeds going to support the charity.
