Chris' Film Club: Lincoln

Today, in 1865, Abraham Lincoln died from his wounds after having been shot by John Wilkes Booth. This moment in history is captured in the film Lincoln, directed by Steven Spielberg, which is not a standard biopic but a film that charts the attempts by Lincoln and his allies to pass the 13th Amendment which abolished slavery.

It stars Daniel Day-Lewis (who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Lincoln), Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Strathairn, James Spader and Tommy Lee Jones. It doesn't have a huge amount of action in it and is very wordy, but the performances are excellent and it's great to see the backroom politics that occurred to pass the Amendment.
