Travel and Tourism Feature with Charles Baker

It's the start of the month and that means that Charles Baker our local Leisure and Tourism expert is back in the studio to tell us what to expect in the coming month.

Firstly we've got a Bank Holiday weekend coming up! Charles gave us just small taster of what's going on in Hertfordshire this weekend : There's a plant sale Shaw’s Corner, Ayot St Lawrence, 12 noon to 5 pm. It includes pre-1950’s varieties of plants, many grown from the Shaws Corner garden. The Event is FREE! Though normal admission prices apply to House and Gardens. Sale also on Sunday 6th starting at the same time. There's also a live show of The Sound of Music at the St Albans Arena starting at 2.00pm.

On the Sunday there's the re-enactment  of the Beating the Bounds Ceremony in St Albans. This was when members of the church and town officals would walk around the corners of St Albans bumping boys on their heads at special marker points along the route.  It will start at Kingsbury Watermill in St Micheal's Village and will be led by the Mayor of the District Council and instead of bumping boys on the head there will be some of our local politicians taking their place!

There's plenty of events going on this weekend so be sure not to miss out and stay in! If you would like more information please ring the local tourism office on : 01727 864511 or go to their website:

At the begining of June is also Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee and Hertfordshire is hosting a number of exciting events from June the 2nd to the 5th. Just to mention a few of the events going on there's the Harpenden Diamond Jubilee Family Fun Day. Expect to find many side stalls and an arean and stage featuring musical performances and activites.

In St Albans there's the St Peters Street Diamond Jubilee Street Party. It will kick off at 12.00pm with a bring or buy lunch and will continue throughout the day.  Expect more side stalls, fun and festivities. There's a number of musical performances starting from 4.00pm to 9.45pm  The day will come to a close with The Lighting Of The Jubilee Beacon at 10.00pm. Up and down the country beacons will be lit celebrating this marvolous and historic event so make sure you're part of it!
