Monthly Feature - With Michelle Hart From The CVS

Today's guest on West Herts Drivetime was Michelle Hart from The CVS. Michelle told us about green volunteering with St Albans Wood Recycling Project. This is a social enterprise which collects wood waste and the collected wood is sorted and anything that is reusable is sold to the community at affordable prices. Furniture and other wood products are also for sale.

Volunteers come from many backgrounds and St Albans Wood Recycling needs volunteers who can help with many different tasks. Please visit their website at www.stalbanswoodrecycling.org.uk.

Michelle also spoke about the Value in Volunteer Management and how volunteers can nominate their organisation to win the award.

Lastly did you know that you could nominate somebody to be a torch bearer for the 2012 Olympics! See the official website at www.london2010.com

WHD - Today's Special Guest - Jessica Valentine!

Today on West Herts Drivetime we welcomed local mum of 3, Jessica Valentine who is in the process of setting up a ladies football team!

Jessica says this is a great idea to meet up with other mums and already they have 13 willing players and a coach. Their 'goals' (pardon the pun!) are to have fun, get fit and do activity outside, rather than the gym.

They are in need of a goalie and as many people who want to join and they will take it from there! There is no minimum or maximum age - the oldest is 45 and the youngest 32. The team will start with the basics such as, how to stop the ball with the side of your foot and stretches. Spectators are welcome as well to cheer them on.

The cost is 3 pounds per session and they will meet next Tuesday 21 June in Verulamium Park by the children's play area. For details contact Jessica at jclauss@gmail.com

As Alan Partridge would say - Back of the net!

WHD - Travel Feature with Andy Jarosz

West Herts Drive Time was pleased to welcome our Resident Travel Correspondent Andy Jarosz!

Andy's first topic was packing for your holidays. As we only have 5 weeks until the schools break up for the summer, here are some ideas to make your packing easier.

As a rule, resorts will have most of what you need i.e. toiletries etc. Stansted Airport has relaxed its rules on hand luggage and you can now take small scissors and nail cutters. Also, do try and pack your hand luggage into one bag only. You can save being charged 30-40 pounds for excess hand baggage. Lastly, will you need all the clothes you take? Check to see if your accommodation has clothes washing facilities. Be sensible - don't take too much and don't take too little!

Volcanoes disrupting travel was next on the list. there are three active volcanoes in the world and their effects can be far reaching. Some airlines are now embracing new technology to detect the severity of ash clouds.

Finally, don't forget how lovely walking holidays can be, especially in this fine weather ! You can walk the calories off and some places even have a 'bag carrying service|'.

Details can be found on www.501places.com.

Many thanks to Andy Jarosz!

Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust on WHD

Today we welcomed Sarah Buckingham, our regular guest from the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust.

The main topic discussed was the Natural Environment White Paper, which was published by the Government last week. This is a key moment for wildlife and conservation in twenty years and the focus is the 'value of nature'. Did you know that bees have a quantifiable value of 438 million pounds a year to crop producers, as they are a 'pollinator'!

There are ninety two commitments in the White Paper, such as the development of twelve nature improvements across the country. Volunteers will play an important role too - get involved and keep the pressure on the politicians to deliver! Details can be found at www.playyourpart4nature.org.uk

Sarah also told us about the campaign against the new speed rail line from London to Birmingham. This will carve up the countryside and wildlife across 160 different wildlife reserves for the sake of saving 21 minutes on the journey. Make your voice heard and write to your MP. Details can be found on www.hertswildlifetrust.org.uk/hs2

Once again, many thanks to Sarah Buckingham!

On Fridays West Herts Drivetime we were thrilled to interview Joe Washbourn and Dan Hipgrave of Toploader!

They spoke to Nick Hazell who is in the WHD hot-seat for Danny about their new album – Only Human which is out on Monday 6 June and the new single – Balance of All Things.

The guys hail from Eastbourne, East Sussex and formed Toploader in 1997. They had a string of chart hits including one of the sounds of 2000 – Dancing in The Moonlight. They decided to break up in 2003 after the demise of their record label, but have now after eight years got back together to release their new album – Only Human.

Joe and Dan chatted to Nick about the making of the new album, which was completed at the end of last year and they said that it has a slightly different feel to it than their previous albums but it is great that the fans have grown along with the band.

Joe is also appearing on ITV's Pop Star to Opera Star with contemporaries such as as Andy Bell, Jocelyn Brown and Midge Ure. The WHD Team wish him all the best!

Toploader are festival favourites and will be playing the Kasbah Festival in Coventry on June 18 and Summer Terrace Festival in Swindon on July 2.

For more details go to Toploaders official website on www.toploaderofficial.com

Risa Hall - WHD's Live Guest!

On Wednesday's WHD we gave a warm welcome to singer songwriter Risa Hall who played a live session with fellow musician Paddy O'Hare and treated us to songs from her new album Glass Half...?

Risa was born in Forest Hills, Queens, New York and went to the same High School as the Simonand Garfunkel and the Ramones (who were her friends).

In New York, Risa started out as an actor and appeared as Frenchy in the Broadway cast of Grease. In the UK Risa continued her theatrical career with the Heather Brothers’ Sin and Salvation in London (with Sinitta), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (with William Gaunt, Joe McGann and Julie Graham) and numerous voice overs and radio plays.

Music was always Risa’s first love and after being inspired by KT Tunstall and Nerina Pallot, Risa picked up her guitar and wrote an album’s worth of material. Nigel Stonier (Thea Gilmore, Joan Baez) heard the demos and asked to come on board as producer.

The result is Glass Half..?, an album of ten eclectic self penned tunes. There have been fantastic reviews so far from ‘Sophisticated, melodic pop’, ‘a dynamic album that entertains from start to finish’ and ‘Risa has a lusty Broadway babe voice and can really belt out the tunes ala Bonnie Raitt’
