Tuesday 31st May - CAB feature with Elizabeth Crampton

Today on West Herts Drivetime, we welcomed Elizabeth Crampton from St Albans CAB.

Elizabeth's first topic to speak about was, on line ticket fraud. With so many events coming up this time of year, many actual venues sell out, so it is tempting to but tickets on the Internet. But beware of Internet ticket scam sites! Always do your research, use sites that you have used before and if in doubt always use your credit card if the ticket sale is over 100.00, as you can claim from the credit card company. Also, is the ticket agency registered with Companies House?

Other topics were Additional Paternity Leave for new fathers and credit applications and credit reference agencies. For more details on the topics discussed please go to the following websites

Monthly Feature - With Michelle Hart From The CVS

We were delighted to welcome Michelle Hart from the CVS with her regular feature on West Herts Drivetime. Michelle spoke on the subject of Internship and how rewarding that can be.

Also, it is time 'to celebrate and inspire!' as the first week in June will be Volunteers Week! There will be lots of displays in local libraries on how to become a volunteer. Michelle tells us that young people in the area have raised over 1k for local charities, so a very well done to all involved. If we can inspire volunteers - the whole of society can benefit.

Michelle told us about the forthcoming Volunteers Management Awards which will be held in July. Volunteers can nominate their organisation and forms can be obtained from the CVS, as can help for organisations to improve their volunteer management systems. So everybody benefits! for further details log onto www.cvsstalbans.org.uk

Just For Fun - Evening Rehearsal Orchestra

The Orchestra is a group of around 25 players (strings and wind) that meets in St Albans on Monday evenings during term time at the United Reform Church in Homewood Road .

We work on a set repertoire for a term, and cater for players with a range of abilities. No auditions are required although an ability to sight read will help.

We do not give concerts, thus giving players an opportunity to tackle substantial works from the classical repertoire without the pressure of public performance. There are currently vacancies in most sections of the orchestra.

The Orchestra is a member of STARTS (St Albans Arts) and is affiliated to Making Music. Full details can be found the web site http://www.stalbans-ero.org.uk

Solodads

Today we spoke to James Topan from Solodads organisation. It was set up when James couldn't find any other organisations aimed at single fathers and acts as a sort of a social support group. Although James wanted to stress it was not counselling!

The group meets at the Peahen every Monday at 7:30pm for a beer and a chat. At the moment, they are talking about arranging trips to possible comedy nights, cycling and hiking events.

It has existed for only a couple of months and has about 5 regular members but people are welcome to join whether on a regular basis or not!

For more information on the organisation, go to www.solodads.co.uk

Three Valleys Club

Today we had Stephen Charles in to talk about the Three Valleys Club, a community fundraising organisation. The group meets every 1st Thursday of each month at the Wheathampstead CIU club. There are currently around 30 members, whose ages start at around 35.

It organises pub nights, meals, competitions and group holidays amongst other events! At the moment the club is supporting St Francis Hospice, a hospice that aims to enhance the quality of life of those suffering from cancer and other life threatening illnesses.

On the 11th June they are staging a Murder Mystery event. The event centres around a play but there is also a meal and the audience ultimately have the challenge of working out who the muderer is!

Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust

Today we had a chat with Sarah Buckingham from the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife, about how the lovely hot weather is affecting the wildlife. Due to this hot weather in April and May, the bluebells have appeared earlier than usual; normally they wouldn't be expected til late May! Sarah reminded us that is it still important to leave out food, water and even baths for birds, especially in this hot weather. However she says that the wildlife is very good at adapting to change, it's the rate of change to the climate that is worrying.

At the moment, the Trust is promoting the 'Living Landscapes' campaign that is all about joining up nature reserves to make sure animals always have a place they can go for shade and to drink.

One of the reserves, Waterford Heath near Hertford, has recently had some great news! It has had a record number of a rare species of butterfly visit the reserve. 49 of the 'Grizzled Skipper' species have been seen, which is great news for the Trust as species are beginning to return to the area.

If you want to see some of these butterflies, there are butterfly walks on the 7th and 21st May at Aldbury reserve and on the 14th May at Waterford Heath. There is also a book, 'Kids in the Wild Garden' available to buy from the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust shop, which contains many ideas for kids on all sorts of things to do in the garden, with colourful illustrations. More events that are coming up include 'Fossil Hunt' on the 15th May and 'How to Make Your Garden Grow for Wildlife' on 25th June. For more information about events or simply the Wildlife Trust, go to www.hertswildlifetrust.org.uk
