Lighting with Gwendoline Alderton
This afternoon we were talking to Gwendoline about different lights to suit your house. She was reminding us how important it is to have lights in doorways and on stairs to make sure your house is well lit at night for visitors; little nightlights upstairs would make the nightly scramble to the bathroom much easier! She also emphasised the importance of making sure the number of your house is well lit and visible, especially if you are selling your house and for visitors.
Gwendoline went on to talk about general lighting. If your room is north facing, its likely to be colder, so consider decorating it in warm colours such as reds and oranges. In the same way, if you have a warmer south facing room, you may want to decorate it in blues and greens to cool it down a bit.
Another important need for good lights is in the kitchen; with sharp knives and hot ovens all over the place, you need to be able to see where you are going! Because of this, it is necessary to have either strip lighting, or spot lighting that can focus on particular worktops. In the bedroom it's always useful to have two lights so one of you can read whilst the other tries to sleep, and if you're reading always have the light behind you to make it easier to read. Although many of us like watching TV in the dark to get that cinema atmosphere, it will make you strain your eyes, so is also0 important to think about lights in rooms with TVs.
