Interview with kirsty Almeida

Hi everyone,

We had singer songwriter Kirsty Almedia on the show this afternoon.

Kirsty, who attended no less than 21 schools whilst travelling round the world as a child with her family, said that her sound is close to 'taking Nora Jones, pickling her for a month, then dipping her in chilli chocolate'! Her influences are a real melting pot and include blues, jazz, folk and world.

Kirsty has just played Glastonbury and said it was a great experience with the sun shining and a great atmosphere. If you'd like to see Kirsty perform, she's playing lots of festivals over the summer. Check out her website for more information: http://www.kirstyalmeida.com/.

And if you'd like to hear the interview, check our blog later for the recording.

Monthly Feature with Karin Williams from St Albans Citizens Advice Bureau

Hi everyone,

Karin Williams was with us today from St Albans Citizens Advice Bureau.

Karin begun by explaining that as the World Cup starts, so does an increase in domestic violence. Many different people can be affected by this issue and it's important to get help as soon as possible and seek legal advice. If you choose to leave your home, make sure you protect your rights to it. For details of how to do this, you can contact the Citizens Advice Bureau.

And if you want leave from work to watch the matches, make sure you book it and don't just take a sickie. If you do call in sick and you're not, you could be dismissed for it.

Karin also advised that a new scheme called the 'Energy Rebate Scheme' has started for those over 70 years of age. This means you should get £80 of your next energy bill if you get the guarenteed part of pension credit and you're not already on a discounted tariff.
Call 0845 600 033 for more information.

More good news followed! From July, the government is launching the 'Saving Gateway'. The scheme will contribute 50p for every £1 you save. If you qualify for the scheme, you should be contacted in the near future or you can go to the DWP website for more information.

And that was it for this month, Karin will be back with us on the 12th July at 5.30pm. For more information about anything Karin talked about, or for advice about anything else, you can call into the Citizens Advice Bureau at 64 London Road, St Albans or call 01727 855269, or check out the website www.adviceguide.org.uk.

Monthly feature with travel correspondant Andy Jarosz.

Hi everyone,

On the show today we heard from Andy Jarosz, our travel correspondant. Today Andy was talking about great walk and days out around St. Albans, Hertfordshire and London.

For St. Albans Andy suggested walks in Gorhambury near the manor house and the 16th century custom built ruin. Andy also suggested near the Waffle House where after a good long walk you can refresh yourself with a nice waffle and a drink. Childwickbury was another suggestion where you can walk by Batchwood golf course. If you feel like walking to Hatfield, Andy suggested the Alban Way which was an old railway as a route where you will pass one of the old platforms on your way. And the last place Andy suggested for a good walk in St. Albans is Highfield Park.

Around the county you have walks in Aswell which has 3 pubs that according to Andy do really good food, Asherbride which a 30 minute drive from St. Albans where they have the beacon which you can up and finally Aldbury in Tring.

For days out in London Andy has suggested that if you are feeling hungry then Bricklane is the place to go for Indian cuisine and Chinatown for the more oriental. For walks Andy suggested walking to all the sites on the Monopoly board game which takes up a good 5 hours.

If you want to find out more from Andy then go to his website www.501places.com or you could follow him on his Twitter page or you could try the Hertfordshire Life website where Andy is a contributer.

Monthly Feature with Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust

Hi everyone,

Danielle Porteous was with us this afternoon from the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust.

Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust manages more than forty reserves across two counties, including some of the best wildlife sites in the UK. These nature reserves cover the wonderful diversity of our landscape, from woodland to grassland, wetland, and heathland.

Each reserve is home to a fantastic array of wildlife, supporting a range of species such as plants, mammal, amphibians, reptiles, invertebrate and birds. To see where your nearest wildlife site is, try searching by your postcode. All nature reserves are free to visit!

Danielle told us that the annual celebration of wildlife has started and there are lots of events going on in the local area.

For instance, do you like music and wildlife? Then combine two of your favourite things on the 12th June at an event called 'Rock and Vole'! You could go along for a walk around Purwell Meadows, Hitchin to look out for water voles and other wetland animals, then record songs with a professional musician, inspired by your walk and get a CD of your songs! The event is free but booking is essential on either the morning session (10am-12pm) or the afternoon session (1pm-3pm). For more information about where to meet and to book a place, email water.vole@hmwt.ork.uk or call Ali Hauser on 01727 858901 (ext 239).

Lots of other events are taking place, for more information check out http://www.hertswildlifetrust.org.uk/.

Danielle also told us that the Wildlife Trust has also recently launched a full-colour book called '152 Wild Things to Do', packed with ideas for family days out. Get your copy at Amazon.

Coming up this week....

Features and interviews you can enjoy this week include:
