Monthly interior design feature with Gwendoline Alderton

Hi everyone,

On the show today we heard from Gwendoline Alderton for our monthly interior design feature.

With half term comingup next week, Gwendoline decided to talk about the design of childrens rooms.

Gwendoline suggested a nurturing, stimulating and practical environment for baby rooms. You could try a neutral colour such as cream or white if you want to avoid the traditional blue and pink. And storage is a key consideration - especially for all those toys!

For those middle years, intense colours are popular at the moment. Design can lend itself to being stimulating to the senses, especially to touch and sight.

And for those teenage years it's was recommended that a room is comfortable and practical. Storage space is important and will help cut down on that messyness!

Gwendoline will be back on the show on the 22nd June at 5.30pm. For more information aout Gwendoline's interior design services, check out www.ga-interiors.co.uk.

Monthly feature with Michelle Hart from the Centre for Voluntary Services

Hi everyone,

Today we heard from Michelle Hart from the Centre for Voluntary Services (CVS).

Michelle mentioned that the recent recruitment event at Waterend Barn was very succesful with over 40 people attending. It was all about the recruitment of Trustees, and as around 20 organisations in the area are still looking for Trustees, further events are being planned. If you're thinking of becoming a Trustee, it's great experience and your skills are really appreciated.

Michelle also advised us that from the 1st - 7th June, the CVS will be providing displays in various libraries in Hertfordshire about volunteering opportunities - check them out for more information - especially if you would like to become a summer volunteer.

The CVs is also going to be running volunteering workshops. This will be a chance for people to find out more about volunteering and what it's all about. These workshops will be for anyone - perhaps you're a student, graduate or somone who has been made redundant who is looking for some more experience. As soon as we have more information, we'll let you know.

For more information on volunteering and current volunteering opportunities, check out http://www.do-it.org/

Coming up this week....

We have lots for you to listen to this week including:

Monthly interview with Mark Clementson of the Verulam Writers Circle

Hi everyone,

On the show today, we heard from Mark Clementson of the Verulam Writers Circle (VRC). Mark informed us that at the moment there are some exciting projects:

Verulam Writers’ Circle has a free newsletter called Veracity. It has articles on local authors, books and successes, writing tips, weblinks, reviews etc. It can be accessed via the VRC website where you can find the 6 previous issues...or you can email the VRC via the web to be added to the mailing list.

The 2011 writer’s conference will take place at the University of Hertfordshire on Sat 19th February. Once again there will be a stella line-up of writers, editors, publishers. Obviously, the last conference was such a huge and successful event that folk are crying out for more!

An upcoming anthology - pieces are being submitted, rejected and edited for this project by end of June. Anyone who wants to come and join the fun at VWC can get involved too. It’s being edited by accomplished writer Jonathan Pinnock - check out his website at www.jonathanpinnock.com/.

A recent success by a St Albans writer is ‘Long Ago or Far Away’ by Ian Cundell. It's on sale through http://www.cundell.net/ and via Amazon.

And three other fabulous writers are:

Oscar Windsor-Smith – just google him to find his stories on the web or go to his blog: http://oscarwindsor-smith.blogspot.com/.

Mandy Knight – fabulous stand-up comedian writing a book about surviving alcoholism...but it isn’t miserable! For more inforamtion, go to www.mandyknight.co.uk/.

Dave Weaver (one of the most prolific writers in the circle). Go to his blog to find some of his stories:

Monthly feature with travel correspondent Andy Jarosz

Hi everyone,

On the show today, we heard from Andy Jarosz, our travel correspondent.

Andy mentioned the infamous volcanic ash cloud that has been causing chaos. The advice was be prepared if you're flying, be flexible and hope for the best! It seems that travel agents have looked after customers better than airlines have.

And you could always avoid it by considering other travel options such as travelling by rail or car. You could holiday in the UK or hop over to mainland Europe on the Eurostar. It's possible to link to many European destinations once you've travelled by Eurostar to Brussels.

Or if you actually like volcanoes they're apparently incredible to visit!

For more information on Andy and various travel experiences, check out http://www.501places.com/.

Coming up this week......

Hi everyone,

Coming up this week we have:

Today: monthly interview at 5.30pm with Andy Jarosz our travel correspondent

Wednesday: we have the Film Guide with Simon Carver at 5.30pm

Thursday: we have a telephone interview with Lisa Hobden at 5.30pm about fundrasing for Freddie Rowe Crowder

Friday: Chris Saunders will be presenting the gig guide at 6.30pm.

Monthly Feature with Karin Willliams of the Citizen Advice Bureau

Hi everyone,

On the show today we heard had Karin from the St Albans Citizens Advice Bureau doing her monthly interview.

To begin with, Karin talked about the new Fit Notes that have replaced Sick Notes. These new notes are for your GP to specify what you are able to do at work and are issued with a view to employer and employee working together to help you return to work. However, it's important that your GP is very specific about what they put on Fit Notes so they are not mis-interpreted by either employer or employee. For more information, you can check out the DWP website at www.dwp.gov.uk

The next topic that Karin talked about was related to the recent volcanic ash that has been causing flight disruption recently. Karin pointed out that if you are delayed and cannot work you have no legal right to be paid although you could take the time off as annual leave. You shouldn't be dismissed due to absence that is due to circumstances beyond your control - if you are you have a very strong case for unfair dismissal.

Next Karin mentioned that the Citizens Advice Bureau have just created some short films in British Sign Language on various topics which are available on the CAB website. To access them, check out www.adviceguide.org.uk.

And the last topic that Karin covered was to do with losing your home if you can't keep up the mortgage repayments on it. You can always contact the CAB and they can discuss your options which include negotiating with your mortgage lender. The CAB can even go to court hearings with you and guide you through the process.

For more information about anything Karin talked about, or for advice about anything else, you can call into the Citizens Advice Bureau at 64 London Road, St Albans or call 01727 855269, or check out the website www.adviceguide.org.uk

Important Poll Results Are In...

It seems you, the listeners have spoken.

A few weeks ago, Jonny Seabrook mentioned on his Sunday Lunchtime show that he reckoned he looks younger than Danny Smith, despite actually being several years older than Danny. Because of this outrageous claim, we decided to set up a poll on our blog to let you, the listeners, decide on this. The poll was closed on Friday afternoon and the final votes were as follows:

Jonny Seabrook 55%
Danny Smith 45%

Therefore, it would seem that the majority of you agree with Jonny that he does indeed look younger than Danny! To add further insult to injury, during the live on-air reveal of the voting results, John Stephenson (presenter of Friday Focus) phoned into the show with the claim that HE reckoned he could win a contest with Danny on who looks younger (Incidentally, John used to be George Peppard's stunt double on The A Team!).

Danny challenged Jonny on the integrity of the voting system and Jonny did admit to some "help" from a friend who teaches IT at a local school. Danny then suggested to Jonny that he should help Robert Mugabe with his next election!

For more fun like this, make sure you tune in weekdays from 4pm - 7pm on 92.6FM in West Herts or online at www.radioverulam.com

Monthly Feature with Tim Hill of Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust

Hi everyone,

On the show today we heard from Tim Hill - our monthly feature with the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust.

Tim talked about everything Spring!

In particular, Tim discussed bird song which is a big feature of the early morning at this time of year. Incidentally, Sunday 2nd May was International Dawn Chorus Day. Tim played a typical dawn chorus that can be heard in Hertfordshire woodlands. Hearing it for yourself is apparently an amazing experience! Hear it from about 4am as the sun begins to rise.

This is also a great time of year to watch out for Spring flowers, including bluebells, especially in the woodlands of Hertfordshire. A great event to see spring flowers is on Thursday this week at Gobions Wood. The Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust are organising a walk between 2pm and 4pm - further details, information on how to book and more information on the Trust can be found on the website http://www.hertswildlifetrust.org.uk/.

Tim rounded off the interview by mentioning that this is a great time of year to see bats as they're coming out of hybernation. Verulamium park is a great place to see them - especially around the lake.

And that was it for this month - Tim will be back with us on Monday 7th June at 5.35pm.
