Monthly Feature with Elizabeth Crampton of St Albans Citizens Advice Bureau

Recommended during the feature was being aware of your consumer rights when buying christmas gifts. All goods should meet the description of what you've paid for, be fit for purpose and be of satisfactory quality. If not, the retailer should offer a replacement at the very least. Some shops go further and offer refunds if you've just simply changed your mind, however many smaller retailers do not and they are not legally obliged to do so.

When making a purchase on the internet, you do have the same rights plus you have the right to cancel the order for 30 days after the date of purchase. However, some items are exempt like flowers and personalised goods.

If you buy goods using a credit card, you also get extra consumer protection. If this happens and the trader won't address a problem, you're credit card company may be able to sort the problem for you. If you pay for goods using a visa debit card, visa can also offer you additional protection.

The next subject was fuel. Many peolpe have turned up the heating with the recent cold weather. Information on how to save energy and reduce energy consumption in your home can be found at http://www.energysavingstrust.org.uk/

For those with illness or disability, social tariffs are also offered by some energy companies and are cheaper than standard rate tariffs. More information should be available through your energy company.

Energy costs can also be reduced by setting up an online account with your energy provider rather than having bills sent through the post. It's sometimes possible to change tariff with your current supplier, and you always have the option of changing your energy supplier if you find a better tariff with a different supplier in your area.

And conventional ways of keeping warm still work.....extra layers, hot drinks and hot water bottles!

The last subject discussed was rent arrears. If you don't deal with rent arrears quickly you could lose your home. The advice was to contact your landlord as soon as possible and then speak to the CAB who will be able to advise on how you can manage the situation.

St Albans CAB are based at London Road, St Albans and can be contacted on 08444 111 444. For more information, visit www.stalbans-cab.org/contactus

Interior Design Feature with Gwendoline Alderton

Gwendoline chose the themes of 'top interior design tips of this year' and also 'design tips for christmas' for this months feature.

Colour was a theme Gwendoline talked about earlier this year, especially 'warm' colours and 'cold' colours. Recommended colours for christmas are a white tree with red decorations, or a more traditional green tree can work well with plum colours. And a splash of black can also work well with plum.

Flexible fiurniture was also discussed. Furniture that is multi-purpose can have many uses over many years, particluary as children are growing up.

Next, Gwendoline reminded us of the advantages of de-cluttering. Start small, perhaps with a few drawers, and see how much you can clear out! It's considered to be refreshing, therapeutic and creates lots of extra space (which can of course taken up with all those christmas presents you're hoping to get!).

Lighting was also mentioned as an important consideration to your home. Mentioned in an earlier feature this year, Gwendoline reminded us that a balance between different kinds of lighting can create great atmospheres in different spaces in the home. Various lighting effects can be created for practical, atmospheric and safety uses.

For more information, contact Gwendoline at Gwendoline@GA-Interiors.co.uk.

St Albans Bereavement Network

Today we were joined by Viv Lawman from the St Albans Bereavement Network. The charity was established about 7 years ago, providing a free service to help individuals who have experienced the death of a loved one. It's based mainly in St Albans and has over 100 volunteers.

Viv was talking today about the Network event this Friday. A 'Shopping Evening' is being held in the Trinity United Reform Church, on the corner of Victoria Street, from 7pm-9pm with a range of stalls to find that present for a special someone! Tickets are £7, on the door, and it buys you a glass of mulled wine, mince pie and entrance.

Viv also wanted to thank everyone who attended the Remembrance Service - it was a great success with over 1000 people attending from around the area! It will be held next year on November 20th 2011 so put the date in your diary!

Further information can be found at http://www.sabn.org.uk/

Is It Too Early To Play Christmas Songs?

Some would start playing Christmas songs at the beginning of December, others would start when Advent commences (which was actually last Sunday).  Others would leave it until the week before the big day.  We want to know what you think.  Cast your vote on our blog http://westhertsdrivetime.blogspot.com
