This evening we heard from Amanda Yowerth from St Albans Friends of The Earth who told us that the local branch deals with both local and international envrionmenatl issues concerning the planet.
Amongst the issues currently under review are the proposal for a local incenerator and the climate change conference in Cancun, Mexico.
Some ideas for all of us to help the environment are:
- Saving energy in the home by switching of lights and appliances when not in use
- Use public transport instead of the car.
Amanda went on to talk about another current issue which is the trade in soya beans which are used to feed livestock in the UK, the soya is grown in the Amazonian area which causes destruction of rain forests. This item is the subject of the Sustainable Livestock bill which goes before parliament on 12th November and you can contact your local MP to raise support for this bill.
The local branch of Friends of the Earth are also undertaking a project in local schools at present by demonstrating how energy can be saved in the home by use of portable energy monitors.
The branch hold meetings locally on the first Monday of each month at 8.00pm and full details can be found at http://www.stalbansfoe.org/or email email@example.com
