Plant Heritage

This evening we heard from Penny Morgan of the Herts & Beds branch of Plant Heritage, the branch has 70 members locally and holds winter evening meetings at Verulam Musuem in St Michaels village.

Penny told us;

At the NCCPG we are working hard to protect and preserve our magnificent plant heritage through:

The National Plant Collections® Scheme 'living libraries' of individual species, cared for by dedicated specialist growers

The Demeter® Project, our computer database which will ensure that precious plant knowledge is captured and stored consistently and securely

Nationwide education and publicity programmes

'Grass roots' activity through a network of 35 regional groups.

However, all this costs money. We are a self funding charitable organisation doing all we can with our limited resources; we raise funds from sponsors and from the activities we organize nationally and through our enthusiastic local Groups and their members.

But we need your help to ensure that this important conservation work can continue.

You can support Plant Heritage's aims by helping to fund areas of activity:

The National Plant Collections® Scheme - it costs around £55,000 per year to provide administration and support for our 450 National Collection Holders

Publishing - the National Collection Holders carry out research into their genus and publish booklets. Each of these currently costs about £4,500 to publish and print

The National Plant Collections® Directory - the Directory is the principal means for informing the public about the National Plant Collections®. It costs about £10,000 each year

Journals - we produce 2 copies per year of the Plant Heritage Journal, which is used to keep our members informed about the scheme. The production of the journals costs £6,850 per year.
