The Gig Guide: Review & Tracklisting - 24th April 2009

Greetings all,

First of all apologies for no preview blog this week, it's been a bit of a hectic one this week what with organising Danny's birthday as well as loads of other things in the outside world of Radio Verulam (and i'm not going into details before you ask :P )

It was a music filled show & a half this week and it was a special one as it was Danny's birthday so what better way to dedicate this week's Outtro track to him.

Tracklisting:

The Raid – We Know Best
www.myspace.com/wearetheraid

Underview - There's this Girl
www.myspace.com/underview

TRACK OF THE WEEK: The Van Kleef – Lamento
www.myspace.com/vancleeffour

Moses & The Black Cats – This Windy Winter City
www.myspace.com/mosesandtheblackcats

OUTRO (dedicated to Danny):
Tom Jones – It’s Not Unusual

Next week it's another music filled show. Keep sending in the tracks as we really do try and play everything we get. Also thanks to all the new friends who have added The Gig Guide to their friend lists. Feel free to message me if your interested in getting your tunes played.

Until next week...

The Budget, St George's Day and The Queen - she's 3 days older than Danny!

Greetings!

Another week gone and we've had more fun on the show...

On Tuesday HM The Queen celebrated another birthday, (21st April ) while on Friday (24th) my partner in crime Danny Smith did the same - which makes him three days younger, give or take a few years. He did a very enjoyable show with a music quiz and mystery callers, mostly his friends and family, even if he did mention his big day every few minutes! (We'll forgive you Dan). Incidentally the Royals have had an interesting week with Prince Philip now the longest reigning consort and Prince Charles arguing with architects and bringing out a new book about the state of the planet!

On my programmes, inevitably, I talked about the Budget. Not content with predicting it on Tuesday and commenting about it on Thursday I actually stayed in on what was a beautiful day, watched the Budget speech and phoned in to do a report on Danny's Wednesday show with the main measures and tried to sound as if I knew what I was talking about! I won't bore you with all the details here. Some of you may have to pay more tax (50p in the £), others will go for the £2,000 trade in on an old car, while the national debt is bigger than any of us can remember. Local reaction from Anne Main MP and others was , I have to say, negative. We also learnt this week that St Albans is the richest town in Britain and peaple here pay more tax than anywhere else.

On Tuesday, Neil McNulty helped out by reading the travel bulletins - it is nice to have a fresh voice on the show and he is doing an excellent job helping us out on Tuesdays and Fridays. On Thursday we had a few technical problems which you may have heard if you were listening around 7pm. Mistakes shouldn't happen but it can be quite fun when they do!

By the way I must recommend the Emerald Hour. Presented by Lydia and Cathy, not only do they play some great Irish music but they have some brilliant discussions. This week's topic is about women suffering from domestic abuse or violence. On next weeks show, listeners will be able to phone in for advice. The programme goes out Thursdays 7 - 8pm.

It has been a busy week for interviews on the programme. On Tuesday we heard about a youth club event for primary school children, a play at the Maltings, a choral concert with works by Stravinsky, Britten and Bernstein at St Albans Abbey/Cathedral (with the Purcell School of Music) on 30th April, 8pm and South Pacific (with St Albans Operatic Society) at the Alban Arena Wed 29th April 'til Sat 2nd May, and we told you about many other local events. For more details tune in regularly on 92.6 or visit www.radioverulam.com

23rd April is St. George's Day so on Thursday I played music by bands or artists entirely from England...tracks from Culture Club, David Bowie, ABC, Kinks, T-Rex, Cream, Rod Stewart, the Clash, Smiths, Kinks, Beatles, Stones, Troggs, Who, Madness, Billy Bragg, Kate Bush, Led Zeppelin, Free, Elton John, Style Council, Bee Gees, Joss Stone and many more. I also gave you some trivia about England's patron saint, quotes from William Shakespeare, John Betjemen and John Major plus music from Henry Purcell, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and a folk song: The Lincolnshire Poacher.

The great thing is we can play a range of music, something you won't get on a lot of the other boring radio stations which offer you "more music variety" then play the same songs over and over again. I've rather neglected the new music this week, something I will put right next week.

If you have any ideas please let us know on this blog, email studio@radioverulam or phone us when we're on - St Albans (01727) 839926.

Back with you Tuesday at 4.

Ta-ta for now!

There will also be some mystery callers, a phone-in competition and lots of my favourite tunes. We will also be bringing you your usual features, including the latest local news & travel plus the gig guide at 6.30pm.

So please join us from 4pm - 7pm on 92.6FM in West Herts or online at www.radioverulam.com

Sir Clement Freud, Handel and the People's Chart

Hello Bloggers

I am sorry, I've neglected you of late. As some of you may realise I have had rather a nasty cold - but since you ask it is getting better thanks. One or two of you may prefer my more gravelly tones, though I still have some way to reach the depths of our afternoon soul and jazz presenter Warren Knight!

Anyway, I was on three times this week. On Tuesday we remembered the 250th Anniversary of composer Georg Freidrich Handel who died on 14th April 1759. Although we tend to concentrate on today's popular music and comment on the news, I have to tell you that this event was too big to ignore. Mack who I met in the Robin Hood pub described Handel as "the Jimi Hendrix of his day!" He wrote some great music, oratarios, choral works such as the Messiah and Zadok the Priest and that tune they use to advertise the Harrods sale, so I put some of that into the show. Although he was German, he actually spent most of his working life in London and wrote much of his work in English so I think we can claim him proudly as one of our own.

On Tuesday, I also shared with you the results of the People's Chart, a Top 75 by PPL which licences all public perfomance of songs played not just on radio and tv but anywhere including pubs, clubs, cafe's and shops. The poll covers 75 years of music so there were some real surprises. The Beatles failed to make the Top 10, but they manage to appear three times as does Robbie Williams. Most other artists only appear once or twice. There's no Motown in the chart and very little soul. In case you missed it here's the Top Five: 1. Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade of Pale, 2. Queen -Bohemian Rhapsody, 3. Everly Bros - All I Have To Do Is Dream, 4. Wet Wet Wet -Love Is All Around, 5. Bryan Adams - Everything I Do, (I Do It For You).

During the week, I also managed to play you tracks by Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Joy Division, T Rex, Renee & Angela, Chic, Fleet Foxes, Prince, 10cc, Morrissey, Joan Osbourne, Junior, Bee Gees, Beyonce, Isaac Hayes, Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and many others. I am also featuring the odd track from the Scottish poet Ivor Cutler.

In the news I was sorry to hear of the death of Sir Clement Freud, the former Liberal MP who is probably best remembered for his lugubrious personality, appearances on 'Just A Minute' and for those commercials he made in the 1970s for dog food with his bloodhound, Henry. He is a reminder that there are at least some decent people in public life. I am getting bored hearing about politicians' expenses and dodgy emails but I remain angry about the wrongful arrest of opposition MP Damien Green for simply doing his job. The continuing news about how the police handled the G20 demonstrations remains a cause for concern. All I can add is that the position of the home secretary Jacqui Smith is becoming increasingly untenable. On a lighter note, I also told you about a man who found a fir tree growing inside him and covered local news including the resignation of two councillors in Welwyn Hatfield.

If you have any ideas about the music you would like to hear or topics we cover on Radio Verulam please use this blog to add your comments.

My partner in crime Danny Smith (minus goatee beard now, I understand) is looking after you three days a week. I am back with you Tuesday and Thursday 4-7pm

Cheers,

John B-S

Also want to say thanks to The Generals for a absolutely awesome gig on Wednesday night and for their Daft Punk medley (and the mention!). Also thanks to Danny from Bebop & Rocksteady, who was also there, and Katie from Polly Poison & Her Electric Antidote for her onstage mention of the show.

G20 and all that

Hello everyone.

So we got though the G20. Did it achieve anything, is there a new world order or was it just a bit of a jolly for the politicians? I told you President Obama was in Harpenden - well in a way he was. If you missed the show then it's too late for me explain now. I also told you why a cuppa will soon cost more. I see Madonna didn't get a second child adopted, from Malawi. The judge said 'no' and I can't say I am sorry. Messrs Ross & Brand are back in the news again - I may comment on Tuesday.

Last Thursday I played a lot of Marvin Gaye as he would have turned 70 and he was shot dead by his own father a quarter of a century ago. I featured some wonderful tracks though managed to avoid the inevitable "Heard It Through The Grapevine" in favour the rather less obvious, including a reggae cover version of 'Let's Get It On'. I also played you everything from Led Zeppelin to Bob Dylan, Toto to John Mayall and his Bluebreakers...not to mention Sugarland, Pet Shop Boys, the Clash, Barry Manilow, Lunik, Beatles, Troggs, Duffy, Supertramp, Sinatra, Jamiroquai, Ian Dury & the Blockheads and many other fine songs.

For more thrills and spills tune in again soon between 4 and 7pm. Mind you, I'm only with you Tuesday this week (Danny is on the other days) so let's make it a good'un!

We also had some great tracks from Saville & Libido Banshee with a rather appropriate Outro track by Radiohead, seeing as they will be playing Reading this year and yours truly will be there to see it. Just want to say at this quarterly stage of the year a big thankyou to everyone so far that has contributed to the show either by sending in their music or appearing on the show and even those who listen. It's been going really good so far and we've been getting some really good feedback on the show. If you have been enjoying the show and have any feedback on how we can make it better or just how much you love it, then let me know and drop me a message.

Thanks again everyone! And remember we're on next THURSDAY, 6:30pm-7pm
